The Comic

Latest page I’ve been working on

I’m realizing that making comics is not for me 🙃. I don’t like drawing digitally, and because I don’t like the process it’s taking a long time to finish. There are five chapters total and each one has at least four pages. The process for each page is line art, flat color, and then add details and shading.

All the ideation for the pages are done in my sketchbook, so for the past few weeks I’ve been turning the sketches into finished, digital pieces. It’s been a slog because I’m just copying something I did months ago. The main thing keeping me motivated is knowing that I’ll be finished soon. I’m gonna have to really pick up the pace though. My release date for the game is fast approaching and I really want to have this done in time. It’s kind of unfortunate that I’m not enjoy making comics because I wanted having a comic in my game to be a part of my ✨brand✨...but I don’t think I can do this a second time 😅 😫.

Done Coding!

Awhile back I finished coding all the core mechanics of the game. I even bought myself a cake to celebrate and my mom ate most of it 😂. Ya gotta bask in the little victories. Any coding that I do from here on out is to fix bugs or to make fun-but-unnecessary things.

“Congratulations to me!”

It’s bittersweet because I hate coding, but I also have fun doing it. It’s like a frustrating puzzle that’s so satisfying when you find the right piece, and for some reason I only feel like I’m making progress on the game when I’m coding 🤷🏾‍♀️.

The gameplay so far

Back to 3D Modeling

The last couple of days I’ve been watching Blender tutorials so I can finish the 3D models in the game. Here’s how things are currently looking.

Making the comic actually helped me figure out what the environment is going to look like. I didn’t really have much of a plan before I started the comic.

I’m watching the Blender Guru donut tutorial specifically and it’s been a good introduction into the program; it touches on a little bit of everything. Blender felt like the best choice as an indie developer because it’s free, it can do a lot in one program, and there are so many tutorials for it just on YouTube alone.

Once I get a hang of the basics, I’ll be jumping back into modeling and texturing for the game. I’m getting style inspiration from Chelsea Saunders’ work.

I like the simplicity and brightness, I might add a little painterly rendering to it, but I’m not sure yet. I also want to take a shot at rigging my characters in Blender too. I know there are some plug-ins that make it easy, so I can just throw the rigged model into Unity and start animating.

That’s all there is to report so far. Still a lot to do before release! 48 days left. Wish me luck 🍀 ⭐
